How to Choose the Right Windows in Your Custom Home

Windows are available in dozens of sizes, styles and materials, so how do you know what’s right for your home? Window sizes don’t come in a one-size-fits-all category. Whether you want big and bold, small and sleek, or practically invisible, it’s all a matter of style and preference.

Your Home’s Design and Window Placement

As you are designing your custom home, your builder will walk you through the best possible window placement for your home’s design.

The way your windows are placed, as well as the type of windows you choose, will have an effect on your home’s energy efficiency. Make sure that’s something you discuss with your builder during the design phase.

Window Framing

Your builder will understand which type of framing is best for your windows, because the type of frame you use hinges on the size of each window, as well as the number of panes.

Our preference is an extruded aluminum clad exterior and a wood interior.  A more budget friendly option would be a pultruded fiberglass window or an all vinyl window.

The Number of Panes Matters

Typically, single-paned windows are the least efficient. With only one piece of glass, they can allow up to 33 percent of your conditioned air to escape.

Double-paned windows, which are two panes of glass with a small space between them, can reduce heat loss by up to 50 percent.

Triple-paned windows are usually double-glazed and feature three panes of glass; there are two spaces between the panes. These back windows can reduce heat loss by up to 70 percent and help to eliminate outside noise.
