Outdoor living spaces continue to be a hot trend in building. As the economy continues to improve in the Middle Tennessee area so has the demand for home renovation.
In a recent interview with the Nashville Ledger, Bryan Edwards, president of Hughes-Edwards Builders, says home owners are staying in their residences longer and creating spaces they love to live in. Click here for the full article.
There are several elements which help create the ultimate outdoor living area, Edwards says. In his personal home, which was featured on the cover of last year’s Greater Nashville House & Home, his porch features numerous seating areas, a fireplace and outdoor kitchen.
“You need to evaluate how you enjoy living in these spaces with your family. If you like to gather around the television with friends and family for sporting events, then add a television to a covered porch,” Edwards says. “If you are a grilling master chef, add a great gas grill area. You want to live and enjoy these spaces to their fullest and that takes good planning.”
Edwards says he uses these basic steps when evaluating an addition plan with a client.
1. Determine your budget and consider how long you plan to reside in the home. This will also help you determine how much you want to invest in your appliances.
2. Talk to all members of your family and figure out how you will best enjoy the space from fall fires to dining al fresco.
3. Draw up a plan of the space and take into consideration the way the pattern of the sun.
Nature should also be considered in the planning stages. “Mosquitos can ruin an outdoor experience in a heart beat. If this is a family concern, we recommend several porch screening options and regular mosquito and pest control systems.”
