How to Choose the Right Exterior for Your Custom Home

Choosing the right exterior for your custom home can be a big decision. You’ll have to think about water resistance, energy efficiency and durability – and at the same time, you’ll be thinking about aesthetics. Some of the best exteriors are made from stone, brick or stucco (or a combination of these).

Could a Stone Exterior Be Right for You?

There’s no way around it: stone exteriors look stunning. Stone keeps the inside of your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The maintenance is minimal, which is a big plus, and it lasts (the stones on the exterior of your home existed long before your ancestors, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon). Stone is durable, fireproof, bug-free and rot-proof, and it generally retains its resale value.

Stone tends to look weathered over time, but many people find that the natural alternative becomes even more beautiful as the years go by.

Brick: It’s Timeless

Brick can be a gorgeous addition to your home. Like stone, brick requires minimal maintenance. For the most part, all you need to do is keep it clean; it’s also energy efficient.

One of the cons of having brick is that water can penetrate it, so your builder will install a waterproof membrane between the brick and its supporting walls. In some cases, one damaged brick can lead to the replacement of an entire wall.

Is Stucco an Option?

Because stucco forms a concrete-like shell around your home, it takes less energy to keep it warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Stucco also reduces sound transmission, which can be just what the doctor ordered if you crave a quiet space (or if you want to spare the neighbors from your beginning drum solos).

Stucco’s life expectancy falls short of stone and brick; it’s only about 50 years. Natural stucco can only tolerate so much moisture, but there are many synthetic compounds designed to last longer in climates like ours.
