As long as you’re keeping up with spills, dirt piles and other messes, you’ll be in good shape with weekly and quarterly cleanings.
In order to keep your hardwoods looking their best, frequent dusting and sweeping are a must; even the smallest particles can scratch away at your floor’s finish, which means over time, it will degrade.
Every few of months, you should use a special solution that’s designed for hardwoods. The old “vinegar-and-water” trick isn’t safe for your floor’s finish, so what you’re looking for is something that’s pH-neutral, biodegradable and nontoxic. You don’t want to use too much water; instead, the cloth you’re using should only be damp. If you feel that your hardwoods need a deeper cleaning, it’s usually a good idea to call in professionals who have industrial-strength tools and safe cleaning formulas.
Maintaining your clean floors is simple: protect them as best you can. During rainy and snowy seasons, make sure you have ample rug coverage around doors (inside and out), and keep tabs on your pets’ nails to ensure that they’re not scratching the wood or the finish.
Other wood floor preservation tips:
- Use felt contacts under furniture legs to prevent scratches, gouges and dents
- Move rugs frequently to preserve the color of your flooring
- Make sure you’re using natural rugs without rubber or vinyl on the bottom (those can trap water)
